This section explains how to create your own website using the latest technologies.
If you are in business for yourself, then it is a good idea to have a website to promote your business. Most people do an online search to get information and to find a business these days.
With technology as advanced as it is today, you don’t have to know how to write HTML code to create a website. With a WordPress Database Platform, you can do it yourself and save thousands of dollars. With this database, your website and blog can be in the same place which is great for the search engines. Also, WordPress is already set up for search engine optimization. Here we will walk you through a step by step process on how to create your own website.
Reference Example: This website is hosted by GoDaddy and built on a WordPress platform.
Free Website vs. Hosted: There are many options out there to build websites and blogs. You can set one up for free or get a hosted account.
Free: To get you started now, you can set up a free website at WordPress.com then later, if you decide to have a hosted account using the WordPress platform, you can easily transfer all your information without having to do it all over again. Using the free account has some minor limitations.
Hosted: You can also start with building a hosted account. We have provided the steps for you…
Basic steps to set up a website:
1. Create a GoDaddy Account
2. Choose and Purchase a Domain Name
3. Purchase WordPress Hosting
4. Choose a Theme (Layout)
6. Create Basic Pages
7. Create Basic Categories (for blog posts)
8. Install Basic Plug-ins
9. Search Engine Optimization
Create a GoDaddy Account
I recommend Go Daddy because its user-friendly. You can purchase your domain name and host your website there too. Plus, I’ve found that they have the best customer service. Make sure to write all of your account information down and keep it in a safe, convenient place.
Choose and Purchase a Domain Name
If you offer a service, I recommend using your name because the service you offer is unique to you and the way you express it is unique to your personality. If you are creating a new business or a community service and want to name it with a business name, make sure to keep it very simple, short, and easy to understand. Avoid anything more than 15-20 characters and always use .com. Don’t get lured into buying the .net and .org also, you won’t need those. Avoid numbers because it can cause confusion whether to spell it out or just type in the number. Also, avoid abbreviations, underscores, dashes, hyphens, and dots. Good example: “doggiedaycare.com”, bad example: “1dog-care.biz.” Can you tell by the first one what the business is primarily about? The second one could be about anything related to dogs, and if your customer heard the advertisement on the radio, they might type in onedogcare.biz, and may never find it. Take your time with this, it is one of the most important steps to get right the first time.
Purchase WordPress Hosting
This is done through GoDaddy.
Choose a Theme
There are thousands of free themes, yet sometimes they don’t offer good support. We use “Pure&Simple,” a free theme from Styled Themes. They offer great themes and customer support. Whatever you decide, just make sure your theme is mobile friendly.
Customize (If your theme allows)
Custom header, colors, footer with copyright info, etc.
